"Who am I to keep you down?" (lyric)

Where has the time gone? Two nights ago we were outside and had 7 separate flocks of swans fly over the house. Fraser Lake is nearby and is said to be the swan capital of the world.

It was such an awesome sight. Spring is finally arriving and our daily temperatures are now climbing up to 10 degrees. My drive to work and home is during daylight, so that makes me very happy as well.

Now enough about the birds and weather, how do you feel about dogs? Love' em? Hate' em? Pee your pants out of fear when you see them? Personally, I've always felt pretty apathetic toward dogs. We had a family dog growing up, a small mutt named Max. Max was very clever, friendly and cute in a scruffy, unkempt way. However, for the ten or so years I lived with him, I feel like I probably only walked him 10 times. As a teenager, it was a lot easier just to let him out when I got home from school and have him hang out in the backyard. I, of course, had to hang out inside and wait for the phone to ring. Even though I just saw all of my friends at school, we still had to gab on the phone for a few hours when we got home. So peer bonding won out over doggy bonding time.

About 5 years ago, I went on a date with a guy down to one of the local conservation areas on Lake Ontario, and I was bitten on the ass by a Bouvier. I was in my mid-thirties and had never had a negative encounter with a dog, and yet this Bouvier chased us down, came at us from behind and I was conveniently the first point of contact. I always wonder if that dog was really after me, as my date had professed me to on previous occasions that he has a huge fear of dogs and when we were walking on the shore, I remember noticing his body tense up as we passed the Bouvier....I'll never know if that dog was after me or him... anyway crappy experience.
The owners, a man and a woman, were just as confused and the woman was slightly hysterical as they ran toward us to retrieve their attacking dog. I suffered a nice wound at the bottom of my right butt cheek, of which the male owner asked to see it right then and there.....excuse me what? Yes, he wanted to see the wound of which I refused and firmly asked if his dog had his shots. Confirmed. Then we left.

Here we are in 2017 and even though I was attacked by a large breed dog we decided to get one. Kevin and I are so smart.
Introducing Nyx ...

She is a pure-bred German Shepherd and turned 4 months old on April 4th. Having this puppy for a total of two weeks has affirmed our decision to never have children. Yes, that's right I'm comparing puppies and children. Deal with it. Or stop reading.

The amount of work, time, and money that has gone into this pup is crazy ... but I do feel the payoff will be grand. She is super smart. She's also pretty darn beautiful. Kevin has a lot more patience than I do, but remember I have two cats who have required very little care and attention for the past 8 years.

I'm having to learn that puppies have endless bursts of energy.... yes endless ... did I mention it's endless? Having her around has curbed my TV addiction, which I suppose is a good thing. Hopefully, Scott McCall and Stiles & Lydia will be all right until I can get back to them.

Nyx is forcing me to be outdoors more, which in turn has made me feel well physically.

Wish me luck with this new family member.

Oh and Kevin named her Nyx after a Greek goddess, but I consented because I can keep with my "musical" pet names and think of her as "Stevie" Nyx.

Wish us luck. Not a very thought provoking post, however, I suspect puppy brain is similar to baby brain and that's my excuse. Oh yea, I'll never give up the comparisons.

  3. Thanks Meg!! We'll see how much you love her when you meet her, hahaha. Seriously, we are still working really hard at making sure she'll be well loved and we'll trained. She's totally a defiant teenager right now.

  4. I meant to leave a comment earlier how adorable your puppy is! Big dogs are wonderful. We just got a tiny Chihuahua for my mom, and I've never had a small dog before. So sorry to hear about that experience with the Bouvier. Holy crikes. I hope Nyx isn't nearly as cheeky (bad joke time) :)
