Bras and Birds
*All photographs have been taken by me unless otherwise stated*
Did you know that Canadian Geographic named the Gray Jay as our national bird? I have gray jays visit me morning and late afternoon. The first time I even saw a Gray Jay, or Whiskeyjack as they are known around these parts, was in Algonquin Park a few years ago with Kevin.
I was truly sad to learn that there were no blue jays here, but the Gray Jays are quickly becoming a favourite, and I love that they are with me all winter. Here they are munching on some bread crumbs; I took these shots through my living room window.
Do you have a fear of birds? Do you have a favourite bird? Do you think watching birds is for the birds?
Last Monday, I wrote yet another piece about procrastination on here, somehow that was the catalyst for getting my ass in gear. I had 2500 words in total completed on Monday for NaNoWriMo, by Thursday night I had upped my word count to 28,000. My goal is not out of reach, I have 4 days to reach the 50,000 and I think I can do it.
Will I keep up this pace? Who knows, but I'm enjoying it while I have it?
To my ladies out there...
Picture this...
A young girl of the age of 14 to 15 is growing up in a little village, set in the Canadian wilderness. This settlement is in the future, a town built with raw resources for survival, with no concept of our modern day world. What is her body image like? Is this girl still self-conscious? Do the women wear bras? Did they discover on their own, their chests need some support? How does this girl feel about her developing womanhood?
Help me brainstorm, use your imagination, there is no right or wrong. I have some ideas myself but am curious about what other women would think. Of course, this is open to my male readers as well, I am being presumptuous in thinking they wouldn't want to answer this.
Would there be bras or some sort of makeshift chest support? (That is the question I'm grappling with the most). Would they shave anything? Men and women? They do have visuals; photographs, books from years and years ago, depicting styles, and aesthetic practices that humans used to use (i.e. our world) would they adopt that? What seems most plausible?
Until next time...
Here's my new friend stuffing his face, which we all should do this beautiful lazy, Sunday.
Thanks for reading, friends!

Your Gray Jay photos are adorable. Being in the southwest, I've only seen one once in Alaska. My ex and I used to be big-time birders. Every vacation we took revolved around birdwatching. It was our thing. To this day, it's hard for me to even look at birds. Breaks my heart a little bit, when they used to bring me such joy. But it's getting better with time. I dug out my bino's yesterday to watch some white-crowned sparrows in my backyard.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm super excited to read about what you're writing! When do I get to see your drafts? Soon, I hope? I am thoroughly impressed with your amazing onslaught of words. Holy cow, that's awesome. Go, girl, go!
As to your Q's, hm! I don't know. If it's a settlement, I suspect fashion would still play a part, even if they don't have any pictures from long ago (although I think it'd be so interesting if they had, maybe, one random photo, and it goes through various cycles of being in vogue, ha ha). Unless humans are in zombie-survival mode, I think fashions are to humans as plumage is to birds. The old, reptilian part of our brain needs SOME way to sort through suitors to locate the most promising ones for procreation, after all.
Susan, funny that we are both bird lovers. I have no doubt, that in time without you even realizing the moment that it happened, you will embrace your bird-watching love again.
ReplyDeleteIn my story, the settlement does have some photos from decades past, but I haven't narrowed down or decided what decades those are- they people in the settlement are allowed to look at/partake in variosu art disciplines, once a year. So they see books and paintings etc. I think I was just really struggling with undergarments, which really doesn't have to factor into mys tory at all-but I got thinking about Edi, that's our main girl and with her developing body, what would that be like for her? Clothes wise? Breast support wise? Ha! I even thought of periods, but there is lots of fabric in the town.
No zombies in this story! I'll leave that to Lally.
And yes, Edi is feeling those hormones and trying to navigate through these feelings for Griffith (that's our love interest). Anyway, I don't know when anything will be posted- I suppose a couple of those first chapters can go up on Scrib.
Thanks for posting. As I mentioned to one friend who reads this, my friends read these posts and then email me directly with their thoughts- not entirely sure why!
T
love the photos and will have to ponder on the bra/body image questions
